Hipsters of 1990s Film #3: The kids in Reality Bites, but mostly Vicki and Sammy.
Now, looking back at the ripe age of 26, I know that I would never date a dude like Troy Dyer (Ethan Hawke) without expecting shit in return, and I would totally go out with Michael Grates (Ben Stiller) lots because he didn’t do anything wrong and was nice. But I guess that Troy was the epitome of hipster sad manchild musician, which is like a manic pixie dream girl, but with boys. I picked this picture because there he is, sulking in the corner over there like the jerk who loves music but would never dance with you.
In any case, Troy opens the conversation but deserves little more. Vicki (Janeane Garofalo) and Sammy (Steve Zahn) knew what it was about. In additionally to being 70s-obsessed and pretty much the most loyal friend ever, Vicki’s character provides the most accurate representation of female promiscuity in film to date. She has her reasons and her systems and doesn’t waste time caring what other people think. And Sammy is the gay friend who doesn’t adhere to any stupid, homophobic stereotypes. He’s just there, and he’d give you a hug if you were sad, and then you’d go to the coffeehouse together and see your loser friend play guitar and shake your heads in unison at how lame he was. And then you’d both go sleep with people and no one would feel particularly guilty about it because why would you do that.
And Lelaina? There’s no use mentioning Winona in a catalogue of hipsters. Even though her hair was cute.
